VFX PR strategy for Goodbye Kansas Studios

.

The client

From God of War to Carnival Row and Jack Ryan, Goodbye Kansas Studios is the creator of award-winning CGI sequences. Whether it’s in film, TV, commercials, or pure motion capture, the studio’s projects have been making waves since it was founded in 2014, with a portfolio spanning a diverse range of projects delivered for clients including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Bethesda Game Studios, and Ubisoft.

The brief

Grammatik has a long-standing relationship with Goodbye Kansas Studios, which has enabled us to deliver a series of successful multi-channel campaigns. As part of our ongoing VFX PR strategy, we were asked to amplify promotional efforts for projects, helping to support recruitment and lead generation. In Spring 2023, the studio delivered VFX for season two of the Amazon Prime series Carnival Row, and also completed work on the cinematic game trailers for God of War: Ragnarok and Skull and Bones. The studio wanted to highlight its outstanding work while attracting new audiences and driving growth.

The strategy

We crafted a PR plan to position Goodbye Kansas Studios as a leading VFX and animation company. With a particular focus on long-form TV and film work, we ran a  multi-channel campaign across social media, press, and live events that captured audience attention.

Thought leadership

To position Goodbye Kansas Studios as leaders in the VFX and animation industries, we used a thought leadership VFX PR strategy to showcase expertise across industry hot topics. A key focus was the studio’s implementation of Universal Scene Description (USD) — an advanced file format and framework initially developed by Pixar Animation Studios to streamline cross-artist collaboration on VFX scenes and assets. USD is an essential component in driving the improvement of the company’s post-production workflows.

Grammatik secured several interviews and comment opportunities that demonstrated how the studio has adapted to the new workflow, along with its predictions on the industry’s future. We also landed an exclusive project breakdown piece with Motionographer, detailing the studio’s successful adoption of the pipeline.

Events and partnerships

Following a series of strategy meetings with Goodbye Kansas Studios, we proposed a tactical approach to events – partnering with technology vendors and industry networks to offer the team’s expertise to wider audiences. Building on that plan, we worked closely with VFX software developer, Foundry, on its speaking engagements at FMX, securing a slot for Goodbye Kansas Studios to present its work on Carnival Row Season 2.

The session was a deep dive into how the studio uses Foundry’s Nuke compositing software to create believable fantasy sequences from complex in-camera shots. Our approach to promoting the session included leveraging existing social media channels and pitching paired coverage to key industry publications.

The Results
